Anthropic Identifies Jobs Most at Risk of AI Displacement

A new study from Anthropic, the AI firm behind the chatbot Claude, offers an early look at how AI could reshape the American workforce.

The analysis comes as concerns about AI and employment are spreading across the workforce. Recent college graduates have voiced worries that automation could limit opportunities for entry-level positions. At the same time, experienced professionals in corporate roles are increasingly questioning whether their positions will remain secure as AI systems become more capable.

Researchers examined the difference between what AI systems are technically able to do and how people currently apply them in real workplaces. The study found little proof so far that AI has significantly reshaped employment levels.

Fears that AI is driving unemployment among recent college graduates may also be overstated. The report found only limited signs that hiring for younger workers has slowed in roles considered vulnerable to automation. Even so, the researchers caution that the long-term effects could be far more significant as the technology continues to improve.

To estimate how exposed different jobs might be, Anthropic compared the specific tasks performed in each profession with the tasks that AI can handle effectively. Most jobs include a mix of responsibilities. Some can be automated relatively easily, while others depend heavily on human judgment, physical presence, or interpersonal interaction.

Computer programmers ranked highest, with roughly 75% of their typical duties considered susceptible to assistance from AI tools. Customer service representatives followed at 70%. Data entry clerks and medical records specialists each registered 67% exposure. Market research analysts and marketing specialists came next at 65%, followed by sales representatives at 63%.

Investment and financial analysts were estimated at 57%, while software quality assurance analysts were at 52%. Information security analysts came in at 49%, while computer user support specialists rounded out the list at 47%.

Anthropic also compared its findings with projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs with higher exposure to AI are expected to expand at a slower pace through 2034 than occupations less affected by automation.

Employees in these roles are also more likely to be older, better educated, and earn higher salaries. The study also noted that many of these professions employ a larger share of women, echoing previous research that administrative and clerical jobs may face greater automation pressure.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are occupations that rely heavily on physical work. Cooks, groundskeepers, mechanics, bartenders, and lifeguards were among the jobs least likely to be affected by AI in the near future.

With tech companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) registering significant progress in their bid to make quantum computing available and accessible to many industries, advanced technologies could reshape the employment landscape in unexpected ways over the coming years.
