Global air travel is set to reach a new milestone with passenger numbers projected to climb to 10.2 billion this year, a 3.9% increase compared to 2025. That surge is driving fresh investment in airport facilities, digital systems, and operational upgrades, with AI playing an increasingly central role.
Data from Airports Council International shows that airport operators are increasingly turning to AI-driven systems to cope with growing volumes of travelers. Rather than relying solely on traditional processes, many facilities are integrating advanced software into daily operations to better anticipate demand and reduce bottlenecks.
Industry specialists speaking this month at the Airport AI Exchange said the technology is reshaping a wide range of airport functions. One area seeing notable progress is the use of predictive analytics. By analyzing real-time and historical data, AI tools can forecast congestion at security checkpoints, immigration halls, and boarding gates. This allows airport managers to adjust staffing and resources in advance, shifting away from last-minute responses toward more proactive planning.
Technologies supporting baggage handling are also evolving. AI-enabled systems can optimize the routing of luggage, reduce mishandling, and improve tracking accuracy. At the same time, biometric identification is gaining wider acceptance. In some locations, travelers may soon pass through immigration using facial recognition, removing the need to show physical travel documents while still meeting regulatory requirements.
According to Airport AI Exchange chief AI Officer Amad Malik, the rapid pace of technological change has transformed what AI can deliver. He noted that although the concept of neural networks has existed for decades, significant breakthroughs began around 2017. Since then, capabilities have expanded quickly, with especially dramatic advances over the past two years.
Beyond border control, AI is supporting automated boarding and check-in processes, predictive maintenance of equipment, and more accurate baggage tracking. It is also being applied to security screening and passenger support, enabling airports to offer targeted assistance based on individual needs.
Despite these advances, some experts caution that aviation has yet to fully embrace the potential of AI. Malik argued that while AI development has surged, its adoption within the aviation sector remains limited. He attributed this gap to the industry’s dependence on older systems and its cautious approach to change.
Many core aviation platforms were built decades ago, and replacing them can be complex and costly. Safety considerations and strict regulatory oversight also slow the pace of innovation. As Malik pointed out, when human lives are involved, reliability and compliance take priority over rapid experimentation.
With businesses like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) making remarkable progress in advancing quantum computing, the aviation industry will have to increase the pace at which it adapts to new technologies in order to tap the benefits that these technologies bring.
