AI to Transform 92% of IT Jobs, Report Says

New research has determined that artificial intelligence (AI) will transform the labor market, particularly for professionals in tech. For their research, the investigators assessed the impact of artificial intelligence on 47 roles in the tech space across the following job groups: cybersecurity, business and management, design and user experience, testing and quality assurance, software development, infrastructure and operations, and data science.

From the report, it is expected that 92% of jobs in IT will see a moderate or high transformation because of advancements in artificial intelligence. The study posits that the biggest change will be seen in entry-level and mid-level tech jobs as certain capabilities and skills become less relevant.

It is expected that AI literacy, rapid engineering, responsible AI, AI ethics and large language model architecture will become more important in this new era, while maintenance of documentation, content creation, traditional data management, research information, basic programming and languages will become easily replaceable.

This is why, the report notes, critical skills are required in tech jobs, including rapid engineering, data analytics and AI literacy. This highlights the need for workers to upskill and reskill.

The research’s findings were published by the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium. The analysis offers insight into the impact of artificial intelligence on IT jobs, given that the consortium is made up of major companies, such as Accenture, Cisco, Google, Eightfold, Indeed, IBM, Intel, SAP and Microsoft.

The consortium obtains advice from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, Communications Workers of America, Chain5, SMEunited, Khan Academy, the European Vocational Training Association and DigitalEurope.

Cisco’s director of people, policy and purpose, Francine Katsoudas, stated that artificial intelligence represented an unparalleled opportunity for tech to benefit humanity in different ways. She revealed that the company has taken on the collective responsibility of upskilling and training 95 million individuals over the next decade.

Katsoudas noted that by investing in a long-term plan for an inclusive workforce, more could take part in and thrive in the era of artificial intelligence.

Other members of the consortium that have made training commitments include:

  • IBM, which plans to train 30 million individuals by 2030 in digital skills, including two million in artificial intelligence by the end of 2026.
  • Intel has also pledged to train more than 30 million individuals with AI skills for future and current jobs by 2030.
  • Google plans to offer more than $130 million in funding to support AI training and skills for individuals in Europe, the United States, Latin America, Africa and APAC.
  • SAP also plans to upskill two million individuals globally by 2025.
  • Microsoft has also pledged to train and certify 10 million individuals in digital skills by 2025.

Hopefully, the upskilling and reskilling envisioned by these major companies will result in fewer people losing their jobs to the AI innovations that are being brought to market by various enterprises, including Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC).
