AI Tech Ushers in New Era in Surgery at University of Washington

Last month, Proprio announced that its surgery guidance platform had helped complete 50 surgeries successfully. Proprio, a vendor of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered surgical tech, developed Paradigm to help in surgical procedures by modernizing how they were performed and perfected by combining immersive and intelligent tech with expertise held by physicians.

It combines the power of light field technology with data intelligence, computer vision and real-time anatomical alignment calculations to make sure that surgeons make informed decisions in the operating room. The tech was designed to combine CT scan data with a visual intraoperative field, allowing for the more accurate placement of implants.

The successful surgeries were performed by Dr. Richard Bransford, together with other surgeons. He explained that prior to the use of this technology, normal navigation and anatomical landmarks helped ensure that implants were being placed exactly where they needed to be. This, and how much radiation was acceptable to both staff in the operating room and the patient to balance benefit and risk, were the primary issues this advanced tech dealt with.

Following its continued use, surgeons asserted that the introduction of this AI-powered guidance system allowed for optimal placement of implants while exposing individuals to less radiation. Results from the University of Washington Medical Center show that the platform achieved this based on preoperatively planned data.

Bransford stated that the platform also accomplished its goals, explaining that it could track motion in real time. He the added that Proprio, which had been developed in Seattle over the last seven to eight years, had taken over from typical navigation in open cases. Bransford also noted that the platform’s record feature also allowed surgeons to measure different aspects of cases, particularly with regard to timing.

Bransford, who is also the director of orthopedics at the Harborview Medical Center-University of Washington, believes all this makes the system revolutionary and will improve how patients are cared for.

In addition to this tech, other AI-powered offerings are also helping hospitals become more efficient. One such platform is Qventus, which maximizes an organization’s resources in a way that aligns with an organization’s strategic goals. The system is already being used at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, with the hospital revealing that the use of this tech helped the organization eliminate many menial processes and tasks, which freed up staff and allowed them to carry out other duties.

The use of Qventus also made it easier for schedulers to identify best times to schedule surgeons on the operating room schedules.

Other entities, such as Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), are also heavily investing in commercializing AI systems, and a number of their AI-powered platforms are already seeing widespread use by the public.
