AI Study Shows Personalities Impact Gene Expression

New research has found that personalities alter how genes are expressed in an individual. The research, which utilized artificial intelligence, has illuminated how the mind and body interact.

For their research, the investigators assessed how the personality of an individual and their outlook on life alters gene expression and affects their wellness and health. This is the first study to measure the entire genome’s transcription in proportion to personality.

Investigators led the inter- and multidisciplinary study from the UGR’s Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, the Andalusian Interuniversity Research Institute in Data Science & Computational Intelligence, and the Biohealth Research Institute in Granada.

The research was conducted in collaboration with the Young Finns study, scientists from Baylor College of Medicine and Professor Robert Cloninger. The research team was made up of specialists in different fields, including medicine, genetics, computer science and psychology.

The investigators used data from the Young Finns study in their research, noting that participants also underwent personality evaluations that addressed character as well as temperament. Their findings demonstrated that some outlooks on life were conducive to a fulfilling, healthy and long life, while others led to an unhealthy, stressful and short life.

Coral del Val, the research’s colead author and UGR researcher, explained the key discoveries the team had made on the organization and expression of genes according to individual personality. First, the investigators found a network of 4,000 genes that assembled into modules, which were expressed in certain regions of the brain. Del Val added that some of these genes were already associated with prior research on the inheritance of human personality.

The researchers also determined that the modules formed a functional network that could bring about changes in how genes were expressed in a bid to alter varying external and internal conditions.

The modules were switched on and off in a flexible manner, which made it easier to adapt to everyday issues faced while individual development was choreographed.

Once this was done, the investigators demonstrated that the pair of subnetworks brought about the changes in interaction patterns between the modules, with one network regulating what an individual thought to be meaningful while the other regulated emotional reactivity, which could encompass fear or anxiety.

In their report, the researchers explained that by identifying these gene networks and the control hub that regulated expression of genes, humans could improve their happiness, quality of life and health.

The research’s findings were reported in “Molecular Psychiatry.

Many companies in different industries and verticals, such as Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL), (NASDAQ: GOOG) are taking a keen interest in leveraging AI. The coming months and years are likely to bring to light more insights that would have taken much longer to obtain had AI not been in the picture.
