AI Solves Superbug Challenge in 48 Hours, Scientists Grappled with it for Years

A scientific mystery that puzzled microbiologists for ten years was unraveled in just 48 hours by a new AI tool.

Researchers, led by Prof. José R. Penadés, have studied the development of antibiotic resistance in superbugs for years. After dedicating significant time and effort to proving their theory, they were astonished when Google’s AI tool—co-scientist—reached the same findings in only two days.

The professor recounted his shock to the BBC, explaining how he needed time to process the revelation. He even questioned Google about whether the AI had accessed his computer, but the company assured him it had not.

The ten-year-long research project included both the initial discovery and the subsequent years spent proving their theory. The team acknowledged that if they had started with the AI-generated theory, it could have significantly reduced the time required for their work.

The AI didn’t just confirm their conclusion—it offered additional insights. According to Professor Penadés, the AI proposed four more theories, all of which were scientifically sound. One of them introduced a concept the team had never considered before, and they are now exploring this new avenue.

The researchers focused on understanding how superbugs—bacteria that resist antibiotic treatment—evolve. Their theory suggests that these bacteria can acquire tail-like structures from several viruses, allowing them to jump between species. Professor Penadés compared this mechanism to a superbug possessing keys that allow it to move between different hosts.

Importantly, this theory was unique to the researchers and had not been shared publicly, making the AI’s findings all the more remarkable. When the AI returned its results 48 hours later, its leading theory perfectly matched the team’s work, supporting the idea that superbugs adopt viral tails to facilitate their spread.

This development has sparked conversations about the potential of AI in scientific research. While some argue that AI will revolutionize scientific discovery and accelerate progress, others fear it could lead to job losses.

Professor Penadés acknowledged these concerns but emphasized that AI is a complementary tool rather than a replacement. He and his colleagues believe that AI-driven research will be transformative.

Reflecting on the experience, he described his excitement at being part of this breakthrough, comparing it to competing in a high-stakes championship match. “I feel like I’m finally part of the Champions League with this,” he said.

Away from the biomedical research field, entities like Salesforce Inc. (NYSE: CRM) are also using AI to bring to market innovative products that could revolutionize the business sphere as we know it.
