AI Investment Drives US Stocks Higher

U.S. equities climbed to fresh records last week as continued enthusiasm for artificial intelligence helped sustain strong demand for technology shares.

The S&P 500 advanced 0.58%, surpassing the prior record notched in August. Similarly, the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite established a new peak after gaining 0.45% in the session.

Large tech companies were among the strongest performers. Six of the seven major tech stocks ended the day higher, with Amazon leading the group after its shares advanced 1.95 percent. Microsoft rose 0.78 percent, while Tesla added 0.51%.

Alphabet and Apple each rallied by 0.22%, and Nvidia edged up 0.14 percent. The sole exception, Meta, declined 0.41%. The company’s shares have nevertheless climbed over 20 percent since the introduction of its Muse artificial intelligence assistant last month.

Elsewhere in the technology sector, Marvell Technology jumped 5.81%, while Cisco Systems surged 4.54%.

Truist Advisory Services CIO Keith Lerner described the current advance as a rally centered on AI and technology. He said those industries remained the main force behind the market’s strength.

The gains come despite several pressures confronting the U.S. Investors have continued to back major technology companies as they commit billions of dollars to data centers and other infrastructure needed to develop and deploy AI systems.

According to Morningstar Australia’s Lochlan Halloway, investors were still confident that heavy spending on AI infrastructure would eventually produce attractive returns. That optimism, he said, had so far outweighed concerns over higher borrowing costs, elevated crude prices, and the 10-year Treasury yield in excess of 5%.

Halloway also cautioned that the market’s dependence on a relatively small number of companies could increase its vulnerability. A weaker-than-expected AI investment cycle could therefore have broader consequences for U.S. and international equities.

The S&P 500 has gained about 14 percent in 2026, while the Nasdaq is up 18.78%. Lerner said historical patterns and expectations for corporate profits could support further gains later this year, although he warned that markets were unlikely to rise without setbacks.

Higher borrowing costs remain one of the principal threats to the rally, he said.

The upbeat mood on Wall Street contrasted with trading in Asia. The Kospi index in South Korea shed 8%, the Nikkei 225 in Japan lost 0.92%, and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong was down 0.57% a short time before the close.

Oil prices also moved higher as investors assessed the impact of renewed war in Yemen involving forces supporting Iran-backed Houthis and the government. Brent crude rose 0.58% to $101 a barrel.

The geopolitical situation in the Middle East is likely to be a key driver of markets in the near term, and enterprises like AI Maverick Intel Inc. (OTC: AIMV) are likely to keep a close eye on the situation as it evolves.
