Academy Says AI-Made Movies Can Be Awarded Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially confirmed that movies incorporating AI are eligible to compete for Oscars. In a recent update to its guidelines, the organization clarified that using AI tools will not give films an advantage or disadvantage when being considered for nominations.

Generative AI (Gen AI), which can produce everything from scripts and visuals to audio elements based on written instructions, has already contributed to recent Oscar-winning films. Still, the Academy emphasized that it will prioritize human involvement and creativity when selecting winners.

These changes come as part of broader updates to Oscar rules. From now on, Academy voters must view every nominated film within a category before casting their final votes, ensuring a more informed decision-making process.

AI’s presence in film became especially prominent after Adrian Brody won Best Actor for The Brutalist, a film where AI was used to enhance his Hungarian accent. Similarly, AI-assisted voice technology was used in Emilia Perez, a musical that also won at the Oscars.
